Curly hair care can feel like an expensive guessing game. There is advice everywhere, but it is rarely personal. And when it does not work, you are left with a shelf (or cupboard) of half-used bottles and the vague sense that your hair is “difficult”.

It is not. The system is.

Why I built CurlCompare

Hi, I’m Rid (4b/4c). I spent years training as a doctor, so I’m used to complex problems. Then my partner introduced me to the world of curly hair routines, ingredient lists, and the very specific art of trial-and-error.

Watching her approach it methodically was the lightbulb moment.

Hair care is a mix of science and lived experience. Two people can use the same product and get completely different results, because the things that matter are not always obvious at first glance.

That's what sparked CurlCompare: to help you cut through the noise and find products that actually work for your hair.

CurlCompare’s simple idea

Instead of “best curly hair products” for everyone, we start with you.

CurlCompare uses a short quiz to capture the details that tend to change outcomes, like:

- your curl pattern (if you know it)
- how your hair behaves with moisture (often called porosity)
- density and thickness
- your main goals (definition, moisture, volume, hold, scalp comfort, and so on)
- what you have already tried

Then we give you recommendations you can actually compare, save, and come back to.

No pressure to get everything perfect on day one. This is a process, and the goal is progress.

A quick note on curl type (and why we go beyond it)

Curl type can be a helpful starting point, but it is not the whole story. Hair can change with damage, hormones, weather, and styling habits, and many people have multiple patterns on one head.

So CurlCompare is designed to look at the bigger picture, not just a label.

CurlCompare is built to improve over time.

When people share what works (and what doesn't), the recommendations become smarter. That means fewer wasted purchases, fewer disappointing wash days, and more routines that feel like yours.
