A brand rooted in a 100-year-old legacy. Sofi Tucker — a widowed mother of four — began selling shea butter and homemade hair preparations across Sierra Leone in 1912. Her grandson Richelieu Dennis honoured that legacy by founding Sundial Brands in New York, launching SheaMoisture as its flagship brand. Today it is one of the best-known textured hair brands in the world, built on the principle that natural, ethically sourced ingredients should be accessible to everyone. The range covers all curl types and hair concerns — moisture, strength, growth, and scalp health — using hero ingredients like Jamaican black castor oil, Raw Shea Butter, manuka honey, and coconut oil. SheaMoisture is sulphate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free across the range. A note on ownership: the brand was acquired by Unilever in 2017, ending its independence. However, the Community Commerce model — investing a portion of profits into Black communities and entrepreneurs — has continued under Unilever stewardship. In the UK, products are widely available at Boots, Superdrug, LookFantastic, ASOS, and Tesco. Not all products are vegan (the Manuka Honey & Yoghurt line contains animal-derived ingredients), and CGM compliance varies by product — check individual listings.
