London-founded, Black women-owned haircare brand built around the principle that effective products should never compromise on safety. Founded in 2008 by university friends Rachael Corson and Joycelyn Mate — both of whom experienced hair loss and scalp eczema from chemical relaxers — Afrocenchix began with a single handmade scalp oil, Soothe, which promptly sold out at a local fair. The brand grew from that community moment into a full haircare range formulated specifically for Afro, coily, and curly hair, though the products work across all curl types. Every formula is made with at least 95% naturally derived vegan ingredients and contains no sulphates, silicones, parabens, artificial fragrances, or drying alcohols. The range is manufactured in South Africa to pharmaceutical-grade standards and uses organic fair-trade shea butter sourced from Ghana. Afrocenchix made history as the first British Afro haircare brand to enter a major UK retailer (Whole Foods), and now ships to over 54 countries. The brand is working towards both Fair Trade and B Corp certification, and uses recyclable, plant-based packaging. Soothe has been hailed by Vogue as one of the best scalp oils on the market.
